im sure this is in the wrong section..if so, please move it.
so i am moving into an apartment...most likely i will get one on the second floor.

when taking the tour, i asked about the weight that the floor could hold. of course, the agent had no idea. she just told me that i should get renters insurance if i was worried about it.

my largest tank is a 46.

should i be worried?

reading the reviews online of the complex, i see that most of them are good but the majority of the complaints are about noise. does this mean the celings and walls are thin?

is there any way i can know for sure?

A 46g weighs about the same a 3 adult men, you wouldnt worry if 3 friends sat on your sofa would you?

apartment buildings are build more stronger than a second floor of a house....I have a 75 gallon tank on my apartment and the floor is solid...46 gallon would weight around 460-500 lbs..shouldn't be too heavy...I know someone who has a 150 gallon on his apartment it had no problem....Just make sure your stand is sturdy and won't collapse cause even a 46 gallon is alot of water and would probably ruin floors or carpets....

Hi jacblades :)

It's good to see you back on the forum, but your post touched a sore spot with me. I am presently in a dispute with the management of the apartment complex I have lived in for over 8 1/2 years. They want me to get rid of my fishtanks and are threatening to not renew my lease if I don't.

While your tank might be perfectly fine in a second story apartment, if they decide it's not, you are likely to have trouble. :/

I live on the 7th floor in my building jacblades. I don't have a 46g set up but I have two 30g tanks right next to eachother and all seems well. I would guess and hope as G_sharky said that apartment buildings are built sturdy.

Inch, that's just terrible and a fear I share but no one in management has said anything to me yet :X .

Hi pica_nuttalli :)

Indeed I do have a few more than 2 tanks! But they are spread out in a more or less horse shoe shaped arrangement that distributes the weight around my living room room. And none of my tanks are larger than 55 gallons. In the evenings it is lovely to sit on my couch and watch the fish. The sound of the water coming out of the filters is so relaxing too.

I live on the first floor, and there is nothing underneath my tanks but a crawl space. :(

it should hold, if it doesnt, the floor is weaksauce. i have a piano on the 2nd floor of the house, i was told it weighs about 5000 pounds and its resting on 3 little wheels.

thanks inch,
hopefully they wont find out how many tanks and other animals my roommate and i have together.
the pet limit is 2 and thats what we said we had...

out of curiosity though, why do they want you to get rid of the tanks? they cant be hurting anyhting.

Hi jacblades :)

Absolutely not! They do not leak or cause any problems at all.

I have no way of knowing what their real problem is, but I suspect that it has little to do with fish and more to do with renovating the apartment and charging the new tenants a lot more money. -_-

But what can I do? :dunno:
