Hello,
As I have stated in my past messages on this forum, I had a bright red Betta fish that died of a combination of tail/fin rot and a fungal infection of some sort that was on his eye, and the rest of the right side of his body. I also said that I had a case of black algae that was really bad, that I had to scrub the tank down like you would not believe. My question is this. What can I do to prevent the black algae from coming back in the future, and to prevent another fish from dying from the same things this past Betta did? The lady at the pet store told me to keep the light on no more than seven hours. I also read on a Betta fish care site, as well as being told at the pet shop, that when it's summer and/or the temperatures fluctuate a lot, the fish is more at risk for bacterial and fungal diseases such as what my past fish had. Not only that, but because I left the light on all of the time, that was when it got ugly, and the algae started growing and got as bad as it did.

Keep the light off as much as you can! If you leave it on you just feed the algie. Also dont use any anit-algie chemicals, they dont work. Actually it made mine grow more.

Thanks
Sean M

PS- the picture under your name looks just like my new male. He was £3.99.

Thank you for the advice. I greatly appreciate it. :) Wow! The picture under my username looks like your new male Betta? Hot red is my favorite color, and that Betta fish in my picture looks exactly like the one I had that passed earlier this month. :)
