I am the owner of a small goldfish bowl, and I wish to decorate it, but I was wondering what would be thought as safe and unsafe.

Wood?
Plastic beads?
String?
Aluminium foil?
Fabrics - silk, cotton, etc?
Paper mache?

Also, any other great-looking decoration ideas would be appreciated.

Goldfish bowls are a little frowned on these days when there are so many suitable tanks about which are simarily priced as a bowl. But if you do have a bowl then you should have a substrate(ie gravel bottom at least an inch deep) Then you should only use the minimal of decoration, preferably ceramic or plastic that has been designed for the purpose of fishkeeping. You local lfs should have these stocked.
Remember every time you place something inside the bowl you are displacing the available water. However surface area is more important to you fish. A good idea is also to purchase some ammo rocks. These specially designed rocks that will help absorb the ammonia that rapidly builds up in a bowl.
You don't say have many fish/type you have in the bowl?
IF however you just own a goldfish bowl and wish to decorate it- go wild!!!!!
Do what you like.

The irridescent glass beads work well - fill the bowl three quarters full with those & use it to hold flowers.

Unfortunately, I waited until after buying my 2 goldfish and their bowl before I read up on them, and now I see that I desperately need a tank.

The pet shop lady claimed that the goldfish grew to the size of the bowl!

uuh yeah pet shop ladies dont give verygood advice... you should atleast get a filter because without it your goldfish wont live long. plastic plants are a big no no they canscratch up the fish. if your going to use fake plants use silk.

The pet shop lady lied!

Buy some dechlorinator & a new bucket - you'll need these for when you get a tank anyway. Keep a bucket of dechlorinated water ready by the tank & do daily 100% water changes until you get a tank - which needs to be at least two foot x 15x12 or 60 litres. ( absolute minimum but will last these fish 6 months or so.)
Ask on freecycle - some one may have one in their shed to tide you over.

Don't spend to much money on decor for the time being. Instead put all your funds into a suitable tank, water testing kit (liquid) and other essentials. The fish would be happier about this rather than decorations.

Good luck with your new fishies.

What is freecycle? How large a tank will I need to buy in the long run for the two goldfish? How much will this cost? What else do i need?

Realistically you need a three foot tank for two goldfish. Take a sheet of A4 pare & fold it in half longways - that is how big goldies could get. Some get much bigger.
A two footer would allow you a few months. A cheap quick fix is a transucent stacker box which will suffice until you get a tank. A couple of quid will get one that holds about 40 litres.

Google freecycle + your area. It is a network of recyclers and you'd be surprised what turns up.

Local authority tips usually have a few tanks people have dumped to.

As to cost - I bougt a 300Litre tank, cabinet & all equipment yesterday ogff Ebay. It cost me £132. New it would have cost around £500.

Spend the money on the tank - extras & decor can wait.
