does anyone know what causes a fish to swim in a barrell-roll motion?

Are all of its fins OK. Other than that it could be a swim bladder problem. HTH

Swim bladder problems cause fish to do this. If you don't have scaleless fish (such as catfish and loaches) you may want to add some aquarium salt to your tank. Follow the directions on he packet for directions on how much to add.
