I get the impression that people tend to be pleased when fish spawn (unintentionally) in their tanks, as it's neat & it affirms the good care re water quality, etc, given.

However, is this really a good thing? My concern is that you either have to remove the offspring & give them a new home, or leave them in there to create an inbred population...

Any thoughts on this?

FYI my first post here - my major tank experience has been in reefkeeping, however I'm in the process of very, very long term planted tank planning.

well if they are egg layers that spawn most if not all of the eggs get eaten before they can hatch. i know have my corys spawn a couple of time in my main tank & due to not having the space or the time to raise another batch of fry i just leave them, :D

I'm somewhat partial to S.A. cichlids, & plan to incorporate them in my future tank... So they're somewhat more protective of their eggs is my understanding.
