i currently have a 15 gal tank that in cycling and i am now looking at different fish to buy. My friend says i can have any fish i would like because they only grow to the size of the tank (like the maximum they would grow to be confortable in the tank). I dont think this is true but i dont know. Can you help me and say if this is true or false. Thanks

Totally false, fish will grow and grow, they may become stunted by being unable to move properly but they will still grow

In a 15G tank, don't go for anything that'll grow to more than 1-2 inches if you want a decent sized shoal of anything. Ask here for any more advice, not your friend!.

I was told the exact same thing. But when you read some of the posts here, thats completly false, alot of people have had fish out grow there tanks. And although there advice might be hard to swallow especially if it means giving back fish (sulks) its best to follow it, as they know what there talking about..

What kind of fish would you like?
Are you looking for:
- color
- personality
- interesting shape
- small groups of fish vs 1 or two

Smaller tanks are harder to make choices for since they are usually too small for very active species, or you can't fit enough of them to truly make them happy. If you can give us an idea of what you might want however, we can prob. give you a few suggestions. ^^

i was really looking for 2 types of tetras ( favouring cardinals and rummynose), some black mollies and 2-4 corys. Any suggestions in those species would be great

Don't add Cardinals until the tank has cycled completely, then matured for another 5-6 weeks at least - they don't do well in brand new tanks, just like Neons. Bear in mind that you have a 15G tank and Mollies can reach up to three inches when adult, that's a lot of your stocking taken care of straight away. If you get females, chances are they'll already be in the club. A lot of the fry will probably be eaten, but some will survive, which will only add to your stocking. In a 15G, I'd go for nothing longer than 2 inches at most, that way you could have a couple of decent (6-7) size shoals of fish. Try to have a look at some Pencilfish - they're endlessly entertaining. Just make sure you give it plenty of thought before you buy. Always bear in mind what the ADULT size of the fish you buy will be. Some fish are very lively and need a lot of swimming space, however small they may seem.

not true fish will grow to the size of the tank but will get stunted and they get sick really easily and die so thats why people need to upsize there tank
