Hey,

My fish tank is situated in my room. While the tank lights are only on for 12hours, I still have a lamp on next to me for another 6 hours (studying or whatever). So my fish only get 6hours of total darkness per day. I was up particularly late last night, and for the first time all of my honey gourami's are trying to hide in a cave. My lamp went off at about 3am.

Generally speaking, how sensitive are fish to light?

i dont think light matters to them. just dont have the light on 24/7.

i notice that when i leave my lights on and come home...my tiger barbs are "sleeping". a lot depends on how secure they feel and such. light helps with finding food and eachother. if the lights off during the day but it has enough sunlight theyll be able to see fine.

fish dont have eyelids so they cant adjust to the lights, thats why when you turn the lights on they will dash about, but saying that they dont read or anything so they dont need the lights on,its just so that we can veiw them nicely, and obviously it helps a lot if you have plants in there :)
when i turn my lights off the livebearers usually rush to the bottom of the tank, but then my oscar dosent even notice.. but then hes stubborn!
but i have heard it said that its better to have the lights in the room on for 10-20 mins before turning the tank lights on so they can be somewhat adjusted, and if you have more than 1 light in the tank, turn them on one at a time :)
