Hi people,
I was hoping somebody may be able to shed some light on what has happened to one of my fish.
On tuesday night I noticed I only had 6 denisoni barbs instead of 7, the tank is heavily decorated but I tried to locate the fish to no avail. Unexpectedly yesterday afternoon the barb re-apeared with the rest looking a little paler but nothing too drastic. ( There are quite a few hiding spots in logs and rocks in the tank which cannot be explored by the human eye easily, if at all) so I wasn't too concerned. I then noticed my festivum go for this fish (he has never attacked any tank mates before and they have all been housed together for over a year) the fish darted of and hid under some bogwood, then swam back to the group of barbs.
The fish then went into some sort of shock / siezure which was quite distressing to watch as it swam erraticly at the surface, twitching and spasming, then into the sand head first as if it where trying to bury itself! It then darted back into a large ornamental rock feature with holes in and has not been seen since. I could make out its tail at one point but it is not there today and I am expecting the worst.
I have checked my water, (30% water change done on monday) and all stats are fine, amonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 25 mg/l, ph 7.5, temp 24.5c.
I believe this fish must have been ill before the attack by the festivum as it did not come out to feed on the tuesday and was nowhere to be seen.
Do you think the attack caused the seizure or was it due to another illness possibly? My festivum seems fine with all the other tankmates including the other barbs. Did he attack because the fish was ill?
Might this be due to another possible illness within the tank? All the other fish are fine, eating swimming and behaving normally.
I am doing another water change tonight and may add some myxazin as a precautionary measure in case of illness. I have a bottle with enogh for a couple of doses left over from november when I treated for cloudy eye in one of my rainbows.
Hopefully somebody can enlighten me as to what has happend to this fish, I don't want any harm to come to the others if this is some sort of disease is responsible. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
