Fish Planner

Ooops - maybe I slightly miss led. It was a total spend of £280. About £160 for the cabinet and tank and a further £120 for all the other bits and pieces. Sorry.

£280 for a 15 hex? Personally i think you paid too much. The rekord 60 is an excellent 15gal tank and its a regular shape which is more handy than a hex most the time. With £280 you could easily get a 1metre tank with the stand, hood light and the usual(heater, filters, pump) and the alot of money left over for fish and bits and bobs, But i suppose as you dont have much time on your hands a 15g is more suitable but you diffently should have taken a regular sized 15. . Welcome to the forums though, Im sure youll benefit like i am from all the help available.

Cycle....

it worked a treat for me. my ammonia spiked when i put it in. it contains ammonia and nitrite to keep the bacteria alive.

i didnt add any ammonia (however my tapwater contains a fair bit and i also killed 2 fish which boosted it initially :*) ) I think cycle is worth while. dont feel down about buying it. it certinaly helped me cycle my tank.

i think you should do a fishless cycle by adding both ammonia as well as cycle.

have you considdered buying ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite test kits? they may be worth your while

welcome to the forums :)

Yeah I got myself a test kit Thursday night. I was planning to do my first water test this weekend and see what kind of readings I get. If the readings are OK then I might risk getting a couple of Danio. If the readings look like they are going in the right direction, then I'll carry on with CYCLE and leave it another week without adding fish. If the readings are going nowhere then its back to the search for ammonia, though I still cannot find anyone who sells pure ammonia.

Thanks for your input though. I never thought when I saw those little fella's swimming about peacefully that it was going to cause me this much brain ache!

take a look in your local boots chemist, they sometimes sell pure ammonia you may have to ask at the counter. Also homebase and focus are supposed to sell it but i haven't looked in the ones near me. B&Q may also sell it.

Emma

I've tried all of those to no avail. Actually they even asked me in B&Q if I wanted it to make bombs!!!! I guess maybe thats why it isn't that easy to come by.

So working from Emma's original recommended list, my prefered tank enhabitants list is as follows:

Start with 2x danio's maybe turquoise or zebra ( ...hopefully they will survive, but I am using them to help the cycle as I understand they are the most hardy  )

Then maybe 2x dwarf gourami ( will they be happier as a pair, if so M/M or M/F )

I will probably add 6 tetra next, maybe 2 rummynose, 2 neon and 2 purple emporer.

I must have at least 2 balloon mollies though I am a bit worried about the conflicting size information I am finding on this fish. Some sites say 2.5" others have said it will grom to 4.75"??? I was in my LFS and love the way they all followed my finger on the outside of the glass!

I would love a betta - but I think I may have to pass on this and although it looks magnificant it maybe just too much in my small tank.

Then maybe 3 cory cats so I have some bottom dwellers as well.

I plan to leave at least 2 weeks between each introduction. Maybe longer with the tetra's probably do 3 and 3 with 3 weeks after each set.

I know I'm over stocked. But maybe it won't all turn out as I plan, or I'll change my mind on my tank mates, or I'll have tank 2 online pretty soon anyway

The dwarf gourami would be better on his own as few people sell females and you would be asking for trouble in a tank that small with two males.

The tetras and danios need to be in a group of 5+ of the same variety or they will act completely unatural.

I would avoid the mollies as they breed like rabbits. If you just get 2 female mollies they can store sperm for 6 months and will have a batch of fry every month so you will still have 12 batches of fry to deal with. Not sure on the adult size but baloons stay smaller than regular mollies.

Be sure to get the dwarf corys as most commonly available corys can get up to 3 inches and so they would take up quite a bit of space.

A betta might work without the gourami if you get a really peaceful group of tetras. Avoid danios with bettas and avoid serpae tetras. It all depends on the personality of the betta so be prepared to get him a seperate tank.

Was hoping to get my first fish today. My LFS did my first water tests.
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0.3mg/l
Nitrate 10mg/l
pH 8.2

Gutted - no fish yet! :dunno:

The cycle continues .............................. :(

as emma12321 said, these fish need to be in a group of 5 or 6, but the zebra danios are also extremely active. Your tank is too small for them. I am thinking about rehousing mine. I believe (but have never kept them myself) that rummynoses are very active too, and they get a lot bigger than neon tetras. I would say get 5 or 6 neon tetra sized fish. How about white cloud mountain minnows (link to there profile in my sig)?

And welcome to TFF :)

AAAARRGGGHHHHHH !!!!!!!!

This is already getting so frustrating. My tank has been filled for just over 2 1/2 weeks. Despite my best efforts to find pure ammonia, I struck out. So I had to settle for cycling my tank with Nutrafin 'Cycle'.

I added 20ml of Cycle to my 59l tank in week one, then the same again at the start of week two as instructed on the bottle. At the end of week 2 we got our water tested at our LFS. Ammonia 0mg/l, Nitrite 0.3mg/l Nitrate 10mg/l pH 8.2.

So I managed to resist the temptation of the Balloon Mollys I wanted and even managed to turn my back on some 'sacraficial' Zebra Danio. I returned home fishless, deciding to give my tank more time to cycle.

I left my tank running for another 4 days and decided to do another water test. I was most upset when I got the same set of results - mainly by the Nitrite 0.3mg/l. So I decided in my wisdom (don't have the first clue) to do a 1/3 water change.

Was this the right thing to do? Why is the Nitrite not going from my water? Am I right in thinking that this should be at least 0.2mg/l before I think about adding fish?

HELP - Please !!!!!!!!!! :grr:

...just a tip, almost everyone i know..will soon go back to the natural side..so start natural from the beggining..

What i mean, is like sand, and live plants and wood. Including myself when i first started, i picked those colorful plants...now, evetything has changed, real ones, real wood, natural colored gravel, you'll see what i mean in a little while

i just paid £270 for a 240litre juwel tank, including cabinet- new, on special. i already had gravel.so a nice cheap set up :D
