I've looked up these fish for two weeks, Apistogramma cacatuoides "Triple Red and finally when i get to the pet store the guy says i can't buy them because they'll rip apart my other fish. I looked them up online and they said they can be peaceful.Who's right.

this is the article about them

Apistogramma cacatuoides is a dwarf cichlid native to Peru. These fish have rather understated color in the wild, but have been selectively bred over the years to produce brightly colored specimens like "Triple Red". Males of this variant are tan and gold with brown spots and intense red-orange speckling in the fins and tail. Apistos are generally peaceful except when spawning. It is best to keep a pair, and as long as there is plenty of room, any other docile tankmates are fine. Provide the couple with a cave area and soft, dark substrate for spawning. Plants make great cover, as well. Feed them a varied omnivore diet of brine shrimp, various larvae and worms, and flake, small pellet, and vegetable matter like spirulina.

I always check several sites and ask on here to get a better idea of a certain fish.
I've kept Apisto. Cacatuoides ina community tank without any problems. Provided there is plenty of room for other tankmates to get away when breeding occurs, they should be fine. The female tends to be more protective than the male and chases anything that comes close. I've certainly never had them rip other fish apart!
I pretty much agree with what the article says.

I am a business owner and I would put it this way unless a customer is right outta their tree, THEY ARE RIGHT!!!

My suggestion is this find out who the dudes boss is an have a little talk about how you have done your research and then have his boss rip him a new one.

I was at petland here and wanted to buy some chinese newts they had, to which the employee tried to get pompus and actually told me since i did not know the scientific name for them he had a right to refuse to sell them to me. To which I proceeded to have a few words with him about how reproducing their store environment of cold water lots of flow was easy and then I let him have both barrels and told him how many tanks I run and how many empty tanks I have waiting to be filled, as I was done stuffing his puffed up head somewhere I made a stop at the managers office to have a polite talk about how my 8 year old son has been wanting some newts/salamanders for months and I had finally decided to set him up a tank.
Now since the manager knows im running so many tanks and regularly drop $100+ more than a few times a week, she sorta looked like I cold cocked her when I said oh and by the way you are not the only fish store in town.

Suffice it to say said employee is more than above polite when we come in, not to play the tough [but my house is a zoo-gecko, chameleon, 4 ferrets, chinese powder puff girl/chinese crested hairless male(4 babies :)), a smackload of fish, quaker parrot, 2 budgies, 3 love birds, 2 cockatiels (one room in our house is an aviary)] the manager took it very serious when the employees attitude was pointed out.

So I suggest talkin to the dudes boss

In the pet industry, I'd rather tell them they aren't right, even if they aren't "right outta their tree." These are living creatures after all.

So if someone slips up and makes a mistake its alright for someone to rip him a new one? I could see maybe telling the manager just to tell the kid he is wrong, but why do you have to be rude about it? I am sure you have made plenty of mistakes yourself...

A slip up ok I understand those, cause we humans do that but trust this was no slip up. In this world of political correctness it is sad that standing up for oneself is seen as being rude!

Sorry friend in my case Matt needed a new one ripped(PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT I SAID FOR HIS BOSS TO DO THE RIPPING PLEASE) since his superior attitude is well known amongst his coworkers, and in the case of the origional poster it would seem that this employee is way outta line since they did their homework and spent more than five minutes looking up what they wanted to buy, and their online research concluded that they would make good community fish. Especially take note of the second person to respond the very fish in mention they have kept without issue so said employee is in error.

I would have to go with give the customer their fish since they spent time to research it and its not a blind purchase

hey pie

I would love to see what the same employee would tell you if you went there and made it look like you wanted to buy a 20-30g set up and then made it like you wanted to put say an oscar, pacu or iri shark in there. Would be interesting to see if they would just sell you the set up or if they would actually try to stop you from putting one of those in a tank that size.

Personally I think its a shame that this employee pulled the power trip on you like that when its plain that you did your homework. May you get these fish you were so excited to get!!!

I didn't say anything about apistos being unsuitable tank mates in a planted tank, they most certainly are!!

The LFS employee is maybe lacking some fish keeping knowledge, and is probably just being precautios. He is doing what he thinks is right and is looking out for the guys fish tank! Definitely better then suggesting him a fish that would destroy his tank. Then maybe, a talk to a manager might do.

I would have to say the tenor of precaution would come off as a suggestion not to put them in said tank, whereas the tenor im hearing in pie's post is one of I know better than you I am in control and I will tell you what you can or can not buy.

I would still have to say this employee is whacked and needs to be given some customer service lessons by his boss since he most definitely is turning away viable business by refusing to sell said fish.

So pie did this employee come off as just being cautious an concerned for your tank or did he come off as if he knew better than you despite what you told him about your online research?

Oh and hello fellow canadian is that discus in your avatar yours nice looking fish

Yes, I guess it does depend on how the employee said it.

Thank you! That is a Discus in my avatar!
