:byebye:

so sad, i have finally taken my fish back to the lfs as they were too big and i had too many in my tank.

so now i can reengineer my tanks a bit. i have a 100l/29 gal tank and a 55l/14 gal tank with the following fish:

9 harlequin rasbora
2 ottos
3 guppies
1 hatchetfish
2 angels.
3 bronze cories

(crikey its so few now! i just rehomed 1 sailfin pleco, 2 silver sharks, 8 tiger barbs, 1 weather loach and 1 angel)

what do people think is the best configuration?

I'm thinking:

29 gal:
2 angels
3 guppies (plus 2 more females to get the ratio right)
1 hatchet (not sure whether to try and get him some friends he can shoal with)
3 bronze cories

14 gal:
9 harlequins
2 ottos.

do you think that sounds right or shall i swap them around a bit more?

I dont keep most of those fish. But I will try to advise on the ones I know about :)

Good for you for rehoming some of your fish tho. I know it can be a hard thing to do.

I think you should get more Ottos, and does the 14 gallon have any plants?

How large are your Angels?

ah, thank you!

the 14 gallon has one potted plant, not sure what its called but it has long fairly thin leaves and is nice and green and bushy. i am also going to spend a little time and money on getting a couple more plants and some decent bogwood over the next few weeks.

should ottos be in a larger group then to be happy?

the angels' bodies are around 7cm/3in high

the hatchetfish is marbled - he was originally part of a group of 6 but they all died from ich, this was before i knew of their sensitivity to ich.

the other thing i was wondering was whether i should get one or two more cories to fill out their group, as 2 of them are nice and plump but one is very thin and i thought perhaps it is left out or something.

Idealy a larger group of Cories is good. You are definately pushing max in both of your tanks still tho. If you think the little guy isnt doing good tho I would say go for it and get a couple more. Make sure they are the same species of cory.

Idealy your hatchet would also be in a group but I just dont think you have the room.

lol and to be repetitive yes the Ottos also like to be in groups, they are so small anyways I think you would benefit from getting a couple more.

The plants and bogwood sounds like a very good idea since all of your fish like to be in planted tanks.

What kind of lighting do you have?

Since you are getting bogwood anyways, you could get some Java Fern which is fairly cheap, and use some fishing line to tie it onto the bogwood.

cheers for the advice, as a newbie who did the whole overstocking thing its nice to be slowly getting to a normal level in my tanks, and i shall be very sparing with what i add.

i don't particularly have the equipment for a planted tank, i just have a single aqua glo lamp in each tank so i know i won't get the proper planted effect, i'm just going to try and get a more normal look for the tank as they are a bit sparse at the moment.

so a couple more ottos it is then - in a few weeks time after redecoration and planting!! and maybe one or 2 more cories! perhaps i won't bother extending my guppy colony then, at the moment the female is in the 14 gal and the males in the 29 gal so she won't get harrassed too much..

Just go for low light plants youd be amazed how easy some of them are to grow. I have had great success with Java Moss, Java Fern, some sword plants, and funny enough the really cheap little bulbs you can buy from walmart. Oh yeah and hornswort, tho I threw it out for I didnt like the look.

Most cories will shoal with any similar species of cory :) It's not necessary to get the same kind, though it wouldn't hurt. They are defenitly more likely to shoal with the same kind, but hardly any less likely to shoal with others (in my opinion). So if you wanted, it wouldn't hurt to pick up an albino cory or a sterbai cory or something if you fancy them :) (this is, of course, just my personal opinion)

Well, I suppose you have a good chance of being right, seeing as how I don't own cories! I was judging by what I've heard others say and by photos, I can't back myself up :) But I know at least SOME cories will shoal with others, and possibly most.

Also, guppies and angels don't mix well as Angels will nip and kill the guppies.

hmm, that's odd. my male guppies have been in with the angels for ages and are fine. perhaps i should put them in the 14 gal with the harlequins, although that will be pushing my stocking levels again:

9 harlequins = 9 inches
3 guppies (plus 2 more) = 5 inches
4 ottos = 4 inches

which brings me to 18 inches. harumph.

And is that 29g a tall one or is it just a regular one? If its a regular one those angels won't work in that tank because they will get to tall for the tank.

its 16 inches tall. i've read conflicting reports about the min height of a tank for angels ranging from 14 to 18 inches, so i figured it should be ok.
