Hi

I have a weird problem that doesnt seem to fit into any disease I can find on the internet. I think this disease affected my dwarf gourami who after 3 - 4 weeks has now started to recover, now the same symptoms are affecting my molly.

It starts with the fish looking "stained" (thats the best description) the scales look blackened, but not with spots, just discoloured.

Then the fish starts hiding.. it looks bloated but not so it pinecones.. the molly is just starting to do this..

The next step with the gourami is that it went slimy looking, and then just when I thought it might die.. it started to improve.. its scales are gradually returning to a lovely honey colour and the slimy look is all gone.

Any ideas??????

p.s it is not black spot, there are no spots just discolouration.

The closest thing i can pin this to is chlorine poisening which causes paling of the skin and scales, slime (mucus), some show redness. Fish acting stresed rubbing against objects in the aquarium, swimming eratically. I have not a clue regarding the black discouloration but chlorine poisening would explain the quick recovery as it may ot have been enough to kill them so it has wounded them and after you did a water change in a disease panic introduced water treatment, therefore removing the excess chlorine and allowing the fish to gradually heal. But as it was not both fish at the same time it does seem odd.

Actually after looking through a textbook i wouldnt mind betting its Vibriosis , Affecting all fish , skin discouloration, exophthalmia, reddish staining of the fins, abdominal swelling, lethargy, Spreads fast and can cause rapid mortality, Caused by Vibrio bacteria.

look into this one but dont act without another opinion as i am not 100% sure myself having never seen such an illness or complication occur in my aquariums.

I dont think its Vibriosis, symptoms I have dont fit that. I dont think its chlorine either as the fish isnt gasping..and no reddening of gills.

its just really weird and I have no idea what it is.. I guess I wont know for sure if its the same as the gourami had until the disease (or whatever it is) has run its course.. just trying to take a shortcut here in case anyone else has seen this before..

Update

I treated with Malacite Green and its gone??? No idea what it was but anyway, the treatment worked.

Had a gourami produce like a grey slime a couple of weeks ago and after a week in quarantine with malachite green he was fine. After a skin scrape i discovered the slime was full of parasitic worms similar to flukes but not so... ye some parasite was probably the cause.
