hi everyone my name is joe and i just stumbled accross this site and i already love it! but i was just playing with the lighting in my tank and i thought it was a little bright. so i cut up some cardboard and placed in under the bulb and it looks alot better in my opnion, but was wondering if that is bad for my fish to never have a bright light above them to simulate the sunlight. on one side (with all the hiding spots i have it darker) and the other side where i have plants its more bright, not to much brighter but slightly. thanks alot everyone and thanks in advancedl

I don't think the fish really "need" a light. The natural increase of light during the day is probally enough for them. I "think" the main reason for the light is so you can see the fish easier, but if your dim light is enough for viewing, then everything should be ok. Since you have plants though, I don't know if the plant is going to be able to get enough light anymore. However, if its a low light plant then it should do ok still.

and my algea eater will be ok too right? because it seems with the dimmer light i have less algea would be made. but im also putting in those algea waffers. so that makes up for the dimming light correct?
