My mom is setting up her 29gal tank and all has gone well until now. I've tried and tried and tried some more to persuade her into doing a fishless cycle. However, he just won't listen to me. No matter how I've tried to explain it, she wants ( and is going to ) put fish in there now. I convinced her out of buying a bunch of goldfish, but now she's going out today to get some fish....I really wish she'd have listened to me...

So I need to know... What fish would be good for fish-in cycling? I need to know ASAP....

When I fish in cycled my tank I used glass bloodfins, I think it'd be difficult to kill them even if I tried! :p (although I did have the tank running with plants a week before I put them in)

lol cant think of much which is hardy about neons.

I'd go with danios

if you can get it in the US....tetra aqua's SafeStart is actually really good in my experience, try adding that to speed things up!

Welp.... I was able to get her not to come home with 50 fish > <

I got her to buy 4 black neon tetras.

and for myself ( in already cycled tanks ) I got a catfish of some sort ( I don't remember the name....started with O...small little striped guy. And a female betta.

That sounds like an Otocinclus, there great little fish though in my experience it's very hard to get them to eat.

You should get some more since they like to be in groups, my Luna however is fine living alone since she thinks she's a java Khuli loach :fun:

Just do lots and lots of partial water changes while the tank is cycling.

In an article I wrote recently, I showed how this does not slow the cycling process and keeps the pollution levels much lower than they would be otherwise:

Just be sure that the temp is near the same as the tank water (I'm assuming you'll be using the same tap water, so the hardness and pH should be very close already) and you can safely do very large water changes, 50%, 70% even 90%.

Aye, It's not a matter of me not knowing what to do... It's a matter of getting my mom not throwing 50 fish in there -_-. She wants to have fish immediately and I don't think she quite gets that if she puts fish in without it being cycled then they'd all die.

I've taken over the task of testing her water and doing at least 10-20% a night and so far nitri/ate and ammonia levels are between 0 and .25ppm. So...All seems good, so far.

why don't you just add some of the media from your cycled tanks to the new one. You can skip the cycle all together.

I plan to do that...but My little 5gal only has so much media. And I've used all my extra media on my own tank. When I've built up enough media on another sponge I plan on putting it into her tank. Sadly though , I'm all out of sponges so it will have to wait til I go to my Not so LFS.

neons are crap to be honest! i doubt they would survive the cycle unless your doing silly amounts of water changes.

mollys are a brakish fish so i would use them. Mollys are good as are danios. Possibly buy some bio-spira and add it when shes not looking :p or explain to her what it does.

Maybe even point her in the direction of this forum i'm sure she will soon realise (BTW my mother was exactly the same, she even has goldfish and tropical together :()

neons.....NEONS!!!!!! lol. Zebra danios are what you want.....

" Those things are too small, I don't want them. I want something I can see. * Whine, cry, throw a fit in the store * "

:D Trust me... I tried getting her to get some Zebra Danios. I was only just able to convince her to get the neons.

She wants to stick a butterfly fish into there at some point in time...Ugh......Shoulda' just put the tank in my room seeming as I'm doing all the work for it. :shout:

:shifty:

I have tried to get her to read the forums...but she's just like a kid when it comes to animals...She wants it now and to hell with what really needs to be done.
