the test kit i have is called 'king british' my parents picked it up for me when they went out in the morning as they knew i needed a test kit. i tested the ammonia again and it comes up as 0 this time. maybe i just read it wrong the first time.

Looks like your tank is cycled! Just to be sure though you may want to do a third test!!!

Nitrates of 50 are OK, I personally keep mine between 5 and 15, but there are a lot of people here who keep theirs even higher than 50! If you have a planted tank you can keep the nitrates a little higher since the plants will use it as food!

My tap water has 20 ppm nitrate and my fish are fine. My nitrates usually sit between 40 and 60.
