Okay, this has puzzled me for some time now--ever since I was little actually. How is it that in a shallow duck pond, which completely freezes solid during winter months, thrives a multitude of fish every spring? We also find the same fresh water fish species in ponds across the country (I think) so this means the fish manage to somehow travel..many miles across land to reach these different water environments! After puzzling over this, my guess is that fish eggs cling to the feathers of water birds, which cary them like bees to different water holes. ...And maybe this is why most fish lay eggs rather than bear live young? Lol, what do you think of this?

I think you're nuts.

Just kidding.

I assume you're talking about the man-made ponds you see in parks? They're probably deeper at the center and fish can survive cold weather pretty well, anyone with a pond could tell you. As for how they get there, I guess they're introduced into the pond by humans. :dunno:

ive always heard birds carry them.....thats what my family teold me anyways... :S

How large are the fish in the pond roughly?
They range from baby fish to the size of my arm! The water looks shallow (at least along the water's edge) and you can see them schooling in relatively large numbers. Sometimes I see people fishing in this pond.

Maybe eggs? Maybe the eggs survive at the bottem. I have no idea about the bigger ones though.
I know that we have a pond about 1 mile away that I bikeride too and read by it, and theres always fish in it. I think the DNR comes by and stocks it....I dont know why they'd care for a small community pond though :dunno:

My cousin had a small--very small pond (about the size of 4 bathtubs put together) and somehow, there were minows in it :shifty:

Coldwater fish can survive at extremely cold temperatures... as long as the fish themselves don't get frozen solid, they can be living beneath the thick layers of ice covering the surface of the pond. A lot of ponds are stocked by people, but I've been told that birds can carry fish too... not that that seems very likely, but I suppose it's possible

I can see the advertisment now.....

For only 3 pebles, get one of our fantasitc flying birds to transport you to a new pond!

If there are fish that are the length of your arm the pond must be deep enough in places to allow fish to survive through the winter, fish simply can't grow a ft or more long within 2 seasons and thus there have always been fish in the pond and are not appearing out of nowhere

Unless she's a miget and has an arm length of 5 inches
