Hi, ive got a aqua one 20 litre tank with 4 plattys in. The tank still seams to be cycling and am checking water stats daily and doing water changes daily to keep the ammonia down. the fish have been great and have even had babies. there are 8 fry also doing great, there about 1.5 cm long and getting fatter. yesterday i did a water change, usead stress coat as usual and put in 2 new plants (from a new fish shop i have never used). Just got home to find 2 fry are now dead and the adults are hiding in the ornament, there tail fins seam to be going to a point and wont fan out! Ive just done another water change but any advice is greatly appreciated! (Ammonia was 0.25, nitrite 0ppm and nitrate 0ppm...as ive said the tank is still cycling)

The tanks to small for livebearers. Even though there small fish they need room to swim, as there active fish.
You really need at least a 10 gallon tank.

Your tanks overstocked with the baby fry.

Immediate water change.
Increase aeration.
Add a teaspoon of salt. Can't add much with having fry in the tank.
Just get a jug of tank water and stir the salt till it dissolves, then add to the tank.

Slimey fins are caused by bad water quality. The fish will produce more slime coat to protect itself.

Thanks for replying so quick!..ive just done another 50% water change and added a teaspoon of salt like you said and turned the air pump up. The other 6 fry all look ok and one female aduly looks ok but the other 3 adults look like there tails are turning whitish??..not like something is growing on it but all clamped together.
The idea was just to have the plattys in there,(i wasnt expecting to have fry so soon)and the lfs said 4 plattys would be ok in there.i am trying to sort out some space for a bigger tank and try and cycle that one ready for them to go in.
Obviously still learning about all this so thanks for the advice! Helen.
