I bought what i hope are 2 afras at the weekend. However, seeing as I had to borrow a cichlid book off the shelf and give the LFS guy a picture so he could net me 2 afras out of their 'mixed cichlid tank' I'm not really sure I got what I asked for. One looks reasonably close to my very untrained eye, but I'm very doubtful about the other. Any opinions would be cool!! Oh, and they both look like they've got egg spots - does this mean they're both male?

Thanks peeps!

Fish 1 - Possibly Afra

I'm gonna have to keep an eye on this topic, I have a trio of the bottom fish, a male and two females the fact thgat i dont know what they are dosent stop em breeding!

I don't think that's a ps. saulosi...I have one and when they are young they are yellow and only the males would turn blue...The first one looks like a white top afra, kinda like mine, although i couldn't really see if it has a pirahna looking teeth, the second one could be a female or a ps. cobalt zebra...

i have 2 like this with out the black stripes they look the same even with the white bits on the bottom fins

mine are blue moori dont know the difficult name

Pseudotropheus zebra.

It is definitely not of any afra species, which is a Cyanotilapia sp.

The top 2 pics, which i assume are the same fish, I'm pretty sure are of an Afra, Cyanotilapia Afra to be precise. I have one and I'd swear yours is the same based on the pics you've posted. Not so sure about pics 3 and 4

We have four of these, 1 male and 3 female they are "White Topped Afra" the LFS that supplied these are very knowledgable on this type of fish and have supplied us with many, See the link below to see our male WT Afra, your first fish is definately a male, you should see this one parading his area, dancing whenever a female passes soon at about 2" When it is likely to breed the pale blue upper of the fish will fade to almost white.

The other is possibly a female, though it is too young to tell, the females go a dull blue/brown when around 1.5" and the stripes fade drastically, however with the stripes being quite visible, it could be a male, it's colours receeding because of the first fish being domininant (Only 1 will colour up)
Good Buy
