thanks :)

Hmm, :S Well its definitely a Malawi cichlid (mbuna) but to me it looks like a hybrid. Its got a Pseudotropheus socolofi kinda look just without the blue body colour. Its dorsal fin and anal fin are quite pointed to that of a socolofi species. Its a hard one, where did you get him?

from a lfs.. He was very young, and just recently obtained his bright colors on his dorsal, pectoral and anal fins while breeding one of my females that closely resembles him..:)

another user in the tropical discussion forum suggested Aulonocara maybe? any thoughts on that? thanks :)

Do you have any pics of the female he bred with??
Nope hes definitely not a Aulonocara breed, as you may know the Aulonocara species are the more open water fish of lake malawi where as your's is definitely a mbuna (the rock dwelling fish of lake malawi).. Some pics of the female could make things a little easier :D never seen your male before mind you, so he could be a hybrid or a poorly bred socolofi or something totally different that is rare and unique ;)

He looks abit like my Metriaclima Zebra Maisoni reefs at the head end but they dont have that darker colouration on the fins.

I would wait to see what his breeding colours are when he is doing his thing with a female then take a snap again.
