I was in petsmart the other day and saw this fish that looked really cool, I just can't remember the name of it to look it up. Please help. Here is what I know:

Petsmart had it labeled as a semi-aggressive fish growing to about 7".
It a brownish/green torpedo shaped with black verticle stripes.
I believe the name said something to the affect of lepri***** *****.

Any help is appreciated. :/

Do you know if it is a cichlid?
Green lethrinops? Or at least does it look similar in any way? (do a google search for images)

Oh! I know what it is... :p
Leporinus! :) Not realy aggressive though... maybe nippy but not aggressive...
Leporinus desmotes - black and yellow leporinus. Gets to 8", schooling fish.
Or it could be the eight-banded leporinus (Leporinus octofasciatus). Gets to 6", schooling fish.
There's some other leporinus but they don't have vertical bands or are too rare.

Thank you sylvia as always you are extremely helpful!

by the way it is a banded leporinus. Are there several species of these as I get conflicting reports on the size they get. 8" is about the max size I would feel comfortable with in a 55G but I've now read some people claiming 4"-12". if there are different species how can I determine which one I'm looking at?

Leporinus are a very mislabled fish, i have seen them so many times labled as peacefull herbivors but this just is not true as anyone who keeps/has kept this fish will tell you.

Leporinus are territorial and aggressive and can quite litterally shred a fish into pieces in a very short time. I suffered a run of deaths from unknown causes a while back of some quite aggressive fish including 2 FW baracuda a small florida gar and a red finned wolf fish, unknown that is until i caught a Leporinus fasciatus in the act of removing the face and gill covers of a dwarf girraffe catfish! I had thought that the damage had been done post mortem as none of the fish in the tank were large enough to inflict that kind of damage but i was very wrong, my Leporinus are now housed seperately until i can decide what to do with them.

Those I had were not realy aggressive :dunno: But maybe that's cause they were in a species tank. Oh and mine were leporinus octofasciatus.

dirtydogg - yes there are several species of leporinus and many look quite similar. You will need to find the scientific name these are being sold under and then do some research on them and compare to make sure that's realy the correct species. However, after what CFC has said, you may want to use caution if adding them to a community tank.

hello i just want to leave some info about your fish dirty dogg. Peaceful. Excellent for community tanks without small fish. A very large tank is required if more than one Banded Leporinus is to be kept together as they can fight.Feed with frozen blood worms, brine shrimp and large flakes. The Banded Leporinus may eat plants, but java fern is not touched. A large tank with large rock formations and some water movement is required. Cover the tank as this species is known to jump.Seldom available in Australia, specimens attract high prices. Often confused with the Black Banded Leporinus.
