My aunt started keeping fish after she saw mine years ago but than got to heavy into it and without knowing she had 5 tanks small tanks. Well she has a shark she says is 2' long and it needs a knew home so she is asking me if I can put it in my 180 Gal. Not really wanting to do it in the first place but I thought I would ask to see if it could work out with adult Mbuna?

I have had a shark like this before in my 29 gal that grew to about 1' long. I eventually let it go in our pond along with our Male oscar from hell. I forget what its called though.

Here is a small pic of the shark

it's a blue shark (Pangasius sutchi). They grow to about 3ft and come from soft water. It should not be kept with Rift Lake cichlids.

Ok Thanks.

I appriciate it. I'll let her know I can't take it.

so your telling us you released NON native fish into the wild????? what state do you live in?

besides the obvious fact that this poor fish has nooo business in such a small tank of course....
what were you thinking?

That was about 8-9 years ago when I did that. Knowing nothing about the fish or anything about the aquaria hobby at all.

When you go and by fish at the pet store when you young or just starting out, I was 16-15 at the time, you don't look at how big they get only... hey he looks cool. Obveouslly I have not bought another one since I now have learned A LOT more about fish keeping and about specific fish in general. So to answer your question, what was I thinking at that time? I was thinking he was cool and to big for my tank not knowing anything about him figuring he would live which I saw him almost everyday in our personal pond

You are right that this fish has no right being in such a small tank and I REALLLY wish pet stores would tell the consumer that a 29 gallon is WAYY to small and these fish belong in 240+ gallon tanks.

nothing, I cant ask the question Colin??

maybe he doesnt realize not only the legal issues but the enviornmental implications to releasing a non native species in the wild.

aahhh I totaly hear you and I'm with you 100% about stores not advising consumers, it ticks me off big time.
ya know.... if you ever get a chance to have that 240 and fishnab those big guys from your aunt they would make a really great soft water show tank!! I'd love to see it if you ever do (hint hint) :hey:

You can ask questions I am just curious why you asked that particular one. He didn't say he let them go into the river. He said he put it in his pond with an oscar.

Believe me, if I could I WOULD! haha. I have my budget figured out so that maybe by the end of this year I could by a 240 but I think I need to get my 180 running first :)
