Fish Guarantee - Do You Return A Dead Fish?

I wasn't testing my levels (other than passive ph [8.2], ammonia [.25] meters, and temp [79]). The Bush Fish lasted 7 days and was eating, but he hid a lot.

I'm guessing I will swallow my pride and return him tomorrow for credit while I determine what went wrong. :/

I'm surprised nobody has said this already.......................

I can make a good guess at what happened for you. You had ammonia present in the water. Ammonia is deadly for fish and the only safe level is 0.

If I had an LFS and you brought me a dead fish and a water sample with ammonia present, i'd show you the door (after selling you a replacement fish obviously  ).

Any ammonia or nitrite present in your water indicates a problem. Levels of ammonia and nitrite should always be 0 in a matured tank.

I don't think you can justify taking a fish back which has been kept in water containing ammonia. That said, the shop should be taking steps to ensure that your water is ok before selling you the fish. Did they ask about your tank / water stats before selling the fish?

BTT :good:

When I first started out, I had a couple of fish die which was more than likely down to my lack of experience and not inspecting the fish in store. Given the price was typically ~£1 it was not worth the hassle as my "LFS" at the time probably cost around £7 in petrol.

Although if I had some beautiful expensive marine fish, I would try CPR first ;)

My new LFS will check your water before hand if you bring in a sample and they do refuse to sell people fish if water doesn't look good.

If any of my new fish die either by the time i get them home - happened once with a glass catfish dead in the bag

I ALWAYS ring the lfs as soon as any die (i rarely have any die) and ask them if they want me to bring the fish back the following weekend or not - if they want it i seal it in a bag and freeze it and then return it to them , i also ask if they will require a water sample

I wouldn't take it back if i knew it was my fault it died - for example if i had - dropped the bag (not done it yet) , not acclimatised the fish properly or had bad water quality (ammonia or nitrites present)

Most lfs will be happy to refund or exchange the fish as long as your water is perfect - i also ask them to test the water in front of me - i know i shouldn't but hey it's my water lol
