I have a tank approx 190 litres about 25-30 fish biggest being a kissing Gourami which is still not fully grown. My probelm being when i bought tank i inherited some of previous owners fish which i know are now killing/eating mine. Mine are neon tetras, guupy's platy's and mollies which are disappearing fast! I do not know names of fish inherited. But the gourami is one, 6 are like angel fish but have black stripes (horizontally) these are ones i think maybe attacking fish? there are also orange/golden looking ones which look like red phantom tetra?? or Serpae Tetra?? Knowing my luck they same fish  I seriously wish i hadn't accepted these fish as i have lost some truly pretty fish so i'm hoping someone can advise me please

Hi, if the kissing gourami can fit the other fish in its mouth then it will eat them,
so are the 6 fish striped angles or something different?? can you post pics
if the tetras are in a shoal they should be ok although both the serpae and phantom species can be fin nippers

Also just to be sure are all the water parameters ok?
are the fish deaths random or close to when they are brought etc.

sounds like you described some tiger barbs there?? they can be very agressive and pick at fins. when you say missing you mean just gone?? as in a fish is eating them...i couldnt explain that to ya. i think a gouramis mouth wouldnt be big enough to eat something like a guppy

Have you got your water parameters please, ammonia, Nitrite and nitrate?

The gourami, most definatley could easily fit neons, guppies in his mouth. Although he may not be the culprit. If these are newly added fish and your tank parameters are not spot on, they would be weakened and possilby die on their own, then the rest of the fish would certainly eat them.

can you post pictures of the unidentified fish?

fish now identified as black widow tetra we have 6 we were only given 5 so one must have hatched bless am now about to test water i'll post results thanks for replies

Ammonia, nitrate and nitrite all fine . We find the fish in bits usually twice found them being eaten by the widow tetras some new fish some older ones. Worried about putting my guppy fry into big tank they are well over big enough now and need to go in at some point

yes one is smaller than rest and we've had about 5-6 months now. I thought maybe i'd miss counted but person who sold us tank and fish said no there were only 5

do you have the exact parameters? are you using liquid or strip tests?
what is the exact stocking of the tank?
how are the filters being cleaned?
can you give anymore info ??

I'm still unconvinced that the fish are the cause of the deaths??

I doubt a tetra 'hatched' and grew in that tank of yours lol. I think the original owner miscounted.

nitrate 40,nitrite 0, ammonia 0 liqiud test kit(API)
5 black widow tetra
5 red phantom tetra
1 admiral tetra(think that name or cardinal?)
10 neon tatra
1 pink Gourami
2 red nosed tetra
3 platy's
4 guppies
2 mollies
4 bottom feeders
tank is 190 litres with 2 fluval 205 filters
Cleaning filters with water change and using water from tank to clean them through
lots of plants
water change fortnightly/ with tetra liquid added to clear chemicals in tap water
fed every 2 days (was recommended by bloke selling us tank (works in pet world too))
(Thinkin on feeding bit could it be possible fish are hungry? )
These fish are going daily, another lost today lost none of the widow or phantom tetra noneof the neon tetra going it seems to be the guppies and mollies , siamese fighter male and female but each time we add a new guppy they seem to go.
I'm willing to try anything to sort this out buy another tank if need be to separate fish.

everything seems ok apart from the feeding regime IMO, with small fish such as tetras and guppys I would be feeding daily,
do you know what the bottom feeders are? plecs, cories, type of catfish etc ?
do you notice any fish chasing others during the day time?
Are any of the fish ever gasping?
do they all seem to be going at a particular time i.e. always at night??
