Fish Going In Filter

I have a 34-gallon Red Sea aquarium set up as a freshwater tank with the skimmer off. A couple of times adult Danios have gotten through the grate filter that cycles water through the back of the tank. I was able to rescue them in both cases. But now we have a pregnant platty and I'm worried that the babies will be sucked into the grate and killed, especially with the strong currents. Does anyone know of a way to prevent fish from going through the grate? There's a somewhat expensive part I can order but any more immediate, low tech suggestions would be helpful.

you could add some mesh/netting if you have any which won't let any fish through. Also try placing the filter in a well-covered part of the tank where plants/decorations will stop fish getting through. As a last resort you can always get a temp. filter with a plastic cover which won't let fish through

how about just seperating the fry ?
a simple breeder net is a good solution it allows water to pass through its better than a trap and you wouldnt have to worry about the fry, plus having them seperated makes it so much easier to feed them the right amount (Y)

Thank you. I like your ideas. The grate that the water passes through to get to the filter is built in but I can try putting more decorations in front of it to kind of re-route the fish. Is there a mesh or netting that you know of that won't block water flow? I'm also debating how to put it on there. I don't want to use any type of glue or tape that would harm the fish.

I think I will try to separate the fry too. But even some adult fish have gotten through the grate so I'm afraid that it will be a long time before I can put them back with the general population unless I do something to prevent smaller fish from getting through.

youd be supprised how quickly fry will grow, theyl be an inch long in a month or two, and antoher (and anoyingly) more expensive and space/time consuming option is getting a smaller tank with a sponge filter for the fry.
