I currently have a tropical fish aquarium with an assortment of community fish like neon tetras and red eye tetra to name a few... I have lately been having trouble with my filter intake tube. My Neon Tetras mainly are getting sucked up into the filter and sometimes are recovered but other times died. I think it is due to their size and it usually happens during the night. Probably while they sleep and drift. I have made a makeshift "screen" around the intake spot but I would like to have a better solution to this problem...

Any Ideas? And if any, thank you.

Some nylon stocking or sponge wrapped around and covering the intake will solve the problem. The filter will still work and you can wash larger debris off whatever you decide to put over it.

P.S. welcome to the site :)

Thanks a lot, I never thought of that... ill give it a try

Also you can get onions and stuff in those plastic nets. You could put that over the filter intake, as that would not obsturct the flow too much.

My filters have little plastic guars on the intakes, surely yours should to, sucking up fish must be a pretty comon problem otherwise...

Unless you are massively overfiltering, the fish will actually be fine in a tank. The most likely turn of events is that the fish dies, or is severely weakened by a disease and is then sucked onto the filter.

I've never had neons get sucked onto/into my filter unless they were dead or dying. Seems strange to me. Unless your filter is a first class bonified brutal suck machine, nothing should be getting sucked up in there.
Try the net though. Or if there is a flow control on your filter, back it off a bit, or if you find it happening at night, just back that filter flow down lower during the night, then kick it back up in the morning.
