Fish for new tank

Hi,

I'm starting to cycle my tank tonight (fishless). I only want to stock tetras (neons or cardinals...pref cardinals but not sure if I can get them) and corys.

I have a 29 gallon (30x15x18 inches) tank.

I can stock 26 inches of fish.

So corys are 1- 3 inches?
Neons 1 inch? (prob less).

So lets assume the corys will grow to 3 inches to be safe.

I could have 6 corys and 10 neons? Is that OK or do you think I could get away with another couple of corys if I aimed at smaller ones?

Also what do I start with? And how many? 3 corys? or 5 neons? neons are so prone to white spot.

Any advice would be great.

Hi ,

The neons and the corys will occupy completely different tank space (neons..middle/top, corys..bottom) and the corys produce very little waste.

With this in mind, and as long as you have decent filtration, i personally think you could stock a few more fish.

Cardinals and neons have very similar colourings so I wouldn't put the two together. Why not think about some different fish? How about: -

8 Neons
6 Harlequin Rasbora
6 Cories

I know, that's why I like them My dream tank will have a 100 shoaling neons. I think it will look amazing.

That's kind of why I'd rather have just 2 species of fish so I can have them shoaling a bit...a small shoal, but 10 would certainly look better than 6.

I could have 12 neons and 6 corys. What about a betta? Neons would fin nip wouldn't they? Could anyone recommend any smallish solitary fish for a community tank?

I had harlequins in my last set up. They are nice. It's just I'm going for a real heavily planted tank and I think the blues/reds show up nice.
