i got some fish food that was really cheap.

Is there anything in the food that i should look for?
for example, certain ingredients that could harmful?

If it's anything like the dog food or baby food made in China then it could kill your fish :(
I hope I don't get booted off for saying that.

If you are feeding goldfish then look for a food with lots of fibre, low fat and low protein.
Small tropical fishes like neon tetras can have food that is high in protein (30-40%).
Other fish do fine with a slightly lower protein level (20-30%) and a bit of plant matter in it.
What sort of fish do you have and can you list the ingredients and % from the fish food container?

Sure, long list though....

Fish Meal, soya bean, flour, yeast, cereals, wheat, corn starch, fish oil ( including Omega 3 ) lecithin, Vitamin A, D3, E, K3, B1, B2, B6, B12, & C. Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid, Nicotinic Acid, Living creature vegetable, potassium chloride, magnesium sulphate, cupric sulphate, ferrous sulphate, zinc sulphate, potassium lodate, calcium phosphate dihydrate.

Crude protein 25%
Crude Fat 1.5%
Crude Fibre 8%
Crude Ash 10%
Moisture 10 %

It looks like a basic goldfish food but with more ash than it should have. Barbs will be fine on it too as will most tropicals if they get some other foods as well as the flake, (ie: bloodworms, brineshrimp, prawn) several times a week.

I am a bit concerned about the cupric & ferrous sulphate they have added. Cupric sulphate (copper sulphate) could be an issue if shrimp eat it. And the iron sulphate might be an issue to the fish if they eat lots of it.
Vitamin K is used for clotting blood, I gather K3 will do the same thing. You can't normally buy vitamin K without a medical prescription because if you take more than a tiny amount you get blood clots and die.
It also has lots of cereals in it, wheat, soya, corn. Very few fish can digest this easily so it has been added to bulk the food up.

If you use the food as part of a varied diet the fish should be fine. However, if it is used exclusively then there might be health issues further down the track.

Thanks :good:

I'll feed this occationaly, as i'll have flakes and i want to try out vegetables too.
I'll only feef them this once a week.
