I recently purchaged some tetra pro colour from my LFS at a "bargain" price of £3.99 for a large tub (RRP £6)...

however, by the time i had opened it and fed the fish, i noticed the sell-by-date was september of 2006...

will this affect my fish, with the sell-by-date being so close? I have a small tub of tetramin that has a sell by date of next year... so it's probably that my tetrapro has been lurking for a year! i have read reports of old-flake-food-induced fish disease...

any tips/opinions?

Hi iamwhoiam :)

Just like with human foods, the date is the last day the stores should sell it, but it should still be good for some time after that. If you still have it six months from now, perhaps you might want to think about replacing it.

If it looks damp or otherwise questionable, toss it right now. :D

Most flake fish foods are good for some time (years even) before they are openned. After they are openned its only good for about 6 months to a year. Most go stale after about 6 months. If the sell by date is sept 2006 it should be good still.
