my gourami is floating at the top of the tank on its side every now and again it try to go down but only gets down as far as to leave his tail at the top is there anything i can do.

It could be stressed. What's your temperature + check your ammonia/nitrate/nitrite.

the fish is in a 2 foot tank on its own as i moved it so the other fish did not catch any thing.
the stats are as follows
p/h 7.6
ammonia 0.25
nitrate 0.00
nitrite 40 ppm
temp 26-27
i think the tanks 40litres

40 nitrite.... words i can only describe in my head right now as they would be inapropriate for the forum. dude you didnt cycle your tank did you? just bought a filter, filled tank with water and threw the fish in?

in my experience gouramies r the most susceptible and will be the first to die! get all the fish outa there take em back and cycle your tank. surprising your tnak hasnt started converting nitrite to nitrate yet! your tank is 3/4 cycled ur ammonia is getting converted but your nitrite isnt for some reason

maybe theres not enogh oxygen in the tank

Is the ammonia reading in the issolation tank.
I would do a water change to get the ammonia reading down.
Swimming on there sides can be swim bladder to internal parasite, damage to the swim bladder.
