Hi There! Please could someone help? I have had my 180L tropical tank for two years. All has been going very well! I did a major clean of the tank 5 months ago and a partial water change about three weeks ago. Water quality is good. But there is a major problem and I have now idea what it is.

I have read up on fish diseases and it would seem that my fish either have flukes, or a viral infection. Please could someone help me diagnose, this more accurately before any more of my fish die? I have already lost two Cichlid's in the last week, both had the same symptoms and died before treatment.

I have an Oscar, two Parrot fish and I had two Malawian Cichlids belonging to the Mabuna and or Auratus species.

The symptoms are similar to swim bladder problems, as the fish struggle to stay in one position or swim upright. They swim close to the surface of the water, my last fish that died last night actually seemed as though he was trying to breath outside the water through his mouth. Upon dying their scales just behind the gills seemed as if they were scrapped or eaten away, I did not see any scraping going on in the tank though!

One of my Parrots has "lost his colour" he was bright orange and is now an off white, I have also noticed a red spot on his head and a few red streaks in his tale fin close the the base of the tail where it joins the body.

I noticed a few dark black worms on the side of the tank walls. But cleared them out ASAP and have no idea if any of this is related to the worms?

Please help! Please let me know if you need any more info.

Could you provide water stats? Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite & PH are a must and GH & KH would be good too.

Sounds like some sort of bacterial infection given the loss of colour and red streaks, this could be a secondary infection due to damage caused by onr of the other fish. Not sure what the black worms are TBH!

Your tank is Very overstocked and quite honestly its also got some compatability issues which will be contributing to your problems.

What is your maintenance regime? If it was 3 weeks since your last water change then you almost certainly have water quality issues with large cichlids.

I agree a bad bacterial infections.
Can you post your water stats as red streaking in fins can be bad water quality to septicemia.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing just to rule parasites out aswell.
