Fish Dying?

Last night my powder blue neon gourami started acting all wierd and when i went to bed it was in that typical helpless position where they are breathing but cant swim. When i turned the tank light off and was a bit dissapointed but it happens. Then my mum came in and said that she felt cruel leaving it and in all honestly so did i! So she asked weather there was anything we could do and i said no. We looked in one of my books and it had a paragraph on killing fish. It says if a fish is in such a condition it cant be cured you should end its missery by cutting its neck with a sharp knife from the spine down. So i did so and i dont know weather i did the right thing? Please help? The fish couldn't move even when my pleco was trying to eat it Poor fish.

You did the right thing mate. Thats the fastest, most painless way to end his misery. Even if your gourami wasnt past saving, what's done is done and he's in a better place. Would he have been better being eaten alive by your pleco?
