Hey all,

Gotta 250 litre well established tank with a range of 70 tetras. Made a mistake of buying fish from pets at home (2 electric blue dwarf gourami) and obviously didnt quarantine long enough. Only 2 weeks. Anyway. past 2 weeks had about 8 fish die. Most been in the tank over a year. I gotta neon tetra with a big bulging eye so for the last week been trating with an anti internal bacteria tratment. Its still alive but the eye is not much improved.

The dead fish showed no symptyoms. But i have noticed one of my platinum tetras does have like a white mist on it. Looks like condensation on a hot window! Its flicking every now an then an is very active. Its been like this for a week mind and is no worse. Any ideas cos im slowly running out.

Im almost certain its not whitespot. Could spot it a mile off. Wondering if its slime of some sort. Any ideas of treatment.?

Sorry, been fishkeeping for years. Tank stats are always closely monitered and there are no problems on that front.

Cheers all. All ideas/ advbice greatfully recieved :good:

It is probably something like costia or trichodina, external skin parasites that cause irritation to the fish and can make them produce excess mucous. The neon with a bulging eye has probably got a bacterial infection. "Waterlife Protozin" should clear up both problems.

Before you treat the tank do a 50% water change and complete gravel clean. This will reduce the gunk in the tank and allow the medication to work more effectively. It will also lower the pathogen count in the water and mean there are less nasties around to infect the fish.

To work out the volume of water in the tank
measure Length x Width x Height in cm
divide by 1000
equals volume in litres

When measuring the height, measure from the top of the gravel to the top of the water level. If you have big rocks or driftwood in the tank, remove them before measuring the height.

Remove carbon from the filter before treating otherwise it will absorb the medication out of the water

You should always quarantine new fish for several weeks before adding them to your tank :)
