:hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: Mouth siphoning fish tanks OMG
hopefully noone here does that. there is no need if you know how to siphon.

Yuck! I quite often get the gravel cleaner stared by mouth syphoning, its a lot quicker and less stressful to the fish than plunging the damn thing up and down 20 odd times to get it going but i think i might stop now

I think most of us on this forum already suffer from that one

Does anyone know a fool proof method of starting the syphon other than shaking the tube up & down and freaking the poor fish out

You can get a syphon starter thingie (technical term) - it's basically a rubber bulb that attachs in the tube with some form of one way valve. You squeeze and release it and it basically pumps the air out of the tube. Not sure how well it works as I have only seen it online.

Tried to find out where I had seen it, but can't locate it :(

Cheers, Eddie

That's not good !! I am still starting the syphon by sucking, but I fold the tube back on it's self about six inches from my mouth, suck until the water gets stuck at the point the tube is bent, then just ensure the bend is lower then the syphon and as you unfold it the water starts to flow with no risk of getting a mouthful...... Works for me.... :D

Well, what I do is put my thumb over the small end of the hose and scoop water up with the big end of my gravel vacuum. Then I let the water drain into the rest of the hose until it is full. It takes a minute, but is MUCH better than starting by sucking on it *yuck*.

Thats exactly what i did, not much fun when you have salt in your tank either!!!! yuk

You can buy a python i think it's called that it's abrande were you put the syphon in the tank and you push or hold somthing it is hard and it is a very crapy way to do it . I saw an electronic one at the fish shop and it cost like $50 in the usa and it you huck it up to somthing and and you turn it on like a vacume and i heard it really works you don't have to worry about getting electricuter unless you put the coard in the water that is not suposto be in it

I simply put just over 3/4 of the hose in the tank ( big end first :fun: ) hold my thumb over the small end and lower it to the bucket. When you let your thumb off the water will begin immediately. It does not stress my fish. As a matter of fact the little buggers always play with the hair on my arm as I am holding the big end in the tank. The same goes for syphoning gasoline: (My Dad is a retired auto mechanic) Put over 3/4 of the hose in, put your thumb over the end, and release when you have the exposed end lower than the lowest part of the tank.

I have heard of dysentary from swallowing tank water........

I have a small one that I use for my 42G tank, and you plug it into the air pump, but it only syphons out the gunk, as the water goes back into the tank.

is this like yours? If not could you please provide more info on yours.
