hey there,
I have a tropical fish tank which has been running for quite a time (about a year) and everything seemed ok, Until I put some new fish in the tank from a shop in the village and all of a sudden fish started die, Not just like the odd one.
I saw that one had died and thought oh well and took it out and then looked back a few hours after and there is about another 2 fish dead, and this looked quite odd that they had died.
I had about 12 cardinal tetra's in there now about 5 or more have died,a rummy nose tetra and my clown loach. it all started happening after I put the new fish in and I thought maybe the fish had some kind of virus or something on them, also one of the new fish died but 2 are still living, I shall give a list of the fish in the tank incase it could be one of the other fish killing it, I thought it could be the tiger barb killing them.

I have...
about 10 mollys maybe more or less not sure.
Some platys, same again not sure how many.
1 Tiger barb ( I have 2 tanks and I had the barb in my other one at 1st but them moved it over to the other tank as the shark I had there killed 'I think' the other barbs I had)
about 5 cardinal tetra's still living.
Some black widows that have been in there since I set up the tank and some I got half way though.
Also I have some rummy nose tetras
and a few red eye tetras.

Does anyone know or think they know what's happening here?

Thanks,
Lewis

Oh, Forgot to add that I checked the tank and the PH and nitrates and ammonia seem ok.. I don't know what's happening :(

I also posted this before in the wrong forum.

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Can you post water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Any symtoms to go on.

Right, First of all the tank isn't mine it's my dad's I own the other tank which he took the barb out of. I think the size of the tank is about 70 litres or it could be gallons.

5 Black Mollys
1 Silver/White Molly
2 Orange Platys one with a black tail
4 Black Widows tetras
4 Rummy Nose tetras
1 Cardinal tetras
3 Red-Eye tetras
1 Dwarf Plec
1 Tiger Barb
That's all of them I think.

The nitrate, nitrate and ammonia were all 0 last time my dad checked and the PH about 7.2 I think.
Some of the fish seem to have there tail nipped, Maybe by tiger barb?

Sorry I'm not much help when it comes to the size of the tank, But my dad's gone out atm.

Hope it gallons and not litres as it overstocked if its litres.
I would find out.

Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Any excess mucas on the fish gills or body.
Do the gills look pale with excess mucas or red and inflamed.
Do the fish look skinny or bloated.
Do the fish labour breath or gasp at the surface of the tank.
Any red red sores or streaking on the body of the fish.
Do the fish look pale or darker in colour.
Can the fish maintain there balance in the water.
Do the fish rest on the sustrate to one side or swim on there sides.
Any white or grey patches on the fish.

Tigar barbs are nippy fish and aggressive and shouldn't be kept in less than a group of 6.

I have noticed that sometimes the fish are at the top of the water and I wonder what there doing. I'd have to check on the rest of the things you said. The fish that are dead do seem to be going like white in colour, also a molly had a big white mark on it's side.

Take a look at the fish for signs of flicking and rubbing. It could be bacterial to parasite.
The white mark on the molly did the mark look fluffy like cotton wool, or bleaching bemeath the skin.

The nitrate reading. What your tap nitrate reading and do you have live plants.

I can't seem to see the molly that had the white spot, But from what I can remember it wasn't fluffy, it was just like the black had turned to white in the area that went white.

I'd have to get my dad to check the tap nitrate, when he or me change the water 20% each week we put AquaSafe in the water to make the water alright, also yes we do have live plants in the tank.

How big was the whitespot,. Was it the size of a grain of salt or bigger.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing. Looks like the fish is rubbing it's self on thing in the tank or something irratating it.

Just wanted to check your nitrate reading as it rare to have a reading of 0.

I'd have to check the nitrate reaing to see what it is.
The white spot was alot bigger than a grain of rice.

It was only the molly with the white spot, but I think it's already dead.

Other fish can catch columnaris if stressed and there immune system is weak.
Caused by over crowding, stress, poor water quality, unstable temp.
A bad strain of columnaris can wipe a tank out in aday.

If the fish are not flicking and rubbing I would take the bacterial route.

Have you got any pictures showing them doing so, so I know what to look out for.
