Hi all,

in the last week and a bit, our guppies appear to die with no ill effects.

The first female died last on Monday, the second, a female, on Wednesday and oday, come bak from work one of the males is say at the bottom of the tank looking more than a bit sorry for himself.

I have 1 male guppy left in there, 5 red-eye tera, 1 kulli loach, 1 neon and a rosy barb (who was being picked on in the main tank, so we moved him here to heal up from torn fins)

If there is a parasite in here, could that be killing them? i.e. once it kills one fish, it moves to the next? Like i said, there is no visible signs on their body, no odd swimming before they die, us looks like they give up, sit on the bottom and die.

:-(

I've had them for about a year and a bit, it can't be old age can it?!???

Thanks all...

I've only just changed the water so....

Ammonia: < 0.1 ~ 0
Nitrite: < 0.1 ~0
Nitrate: 5-10
PH: somewhere in between 7.7 -> 8.0
Temperature: ~ 26 degrees
Size: 70ltr (Tropiquarium 68)

Just smelt the water, and there is a very (and I mean very) small Sulphur smell... but thats about the area near the algae on the lights on the hood.

Thinking about it, this is since I changed the water...

Used water conditioner, about a 50% water change (needed a one)(that part of the water changing cycle) but I tried to balance the temp by using water from the (cleaned) kettle to top up the cold water.

Hmmm.... could it be to do with a kettle?!?!?

Many water conditioners cause the water to have a sulfurous smell like prime for example. But it could be fish TB which causes multiple fish deaths with no apparent illness.

re: sulphur.. great. thanks!

Came in last night, and a male guppy was on his side, rather dead looking. Went to scoop him out and I startled the rosy barb who was hiding behind some wood.

He started swimming in a corkscrew type of way bashing off everything!!! Sank to the bottom upside down, then spent the next couple of minutes swimming in like a corkscrew whilst I fished out the (supposedly) dead guppy.

That started swimming too...

Right.. grabbed two of the floating fry tanks and put one of each fish in the tanks.

This is now gone midnight and knackered. We have some filter safe anti-internal bacteria medication from interpet (number 9 if that helps)

Miss-read the label, and put in 4 times the dose.

Now, come down this morning and it looks like the guppy is dead. The barb is laying at the bottom of the fry tank. still alive, just not swimming.. it is early and most of them are sleepy still. I'll give him a bit longer, but the guppy looks dead.

Gotta go, I've got another fish to remove. :-(

Sorry to hear your problems, apart from overdosing your fish, I think treating for anti internal bacteria is the way to go.

Now, do you have any charcoal pads? Charcoal will remove the medication from the tank and then you can redose. Do a 50% water change as well. Leave the charcoal in overnight and redose tomorrow after doing another water cahnge (don't have to do as much tomorrow).

Hope you get this in time to get the charcoal. Good luck.

Thanks all,

the filter in the tank normally contains a carbon filter section, just before all the hex-nodes. I took it out as per the instructions of the anti-bacterial treatment. And it is still out.

We've been away for the evening, and glad to say that no more have died over night, however yesterday afternoon before we left the bard died and we had to take him out.

I was chatting to someone at the LFS. This guy really knows his stuff, and he said that many people in the area have been saying that they've been loosing fish over the last couple of weeks since they changed water.. looks like there maybe something in the water in the area that the treatments aren't neutralising.

Just to let you know, I'm in North Hertfordshire (Royston) on the Three Valley water supply. Anyone else seeing any issues?
