I'm hopefully buying my first tropical tank in the next few days, and I was wondering what fish to put in it. I had been thinking of 8 neons, 4 hatchetfish and 2 guppies. Is this OK?

yep, that is fine.
i have all them fish in my tank.
i think you should think about getting 5 hatchets

All those fish are compatible but what size of tank are you looking to buy ? Also have you read about fishless cycling ?

With the guppies do you want them to breed ? If so your ratio should be one male to 2-3 females . If you don't want babies then buy males . Neons preffer and do better in a more established tank (6 months or older) so these should be the last fish you add

Kizz
:D

just be careful with the water you'll be putting in the aquarium, test the PH level first or else your fish will die in no time.

Thanks. I have a book on how to set up and maintain a tropical fish tank but it says nothing about compatibility. I don't particularly want a brood of Guppies! About the Hatchets, I think that having more might overcrowd the tank, but maybe 5 is fine

I would highly recomend tiger barbs. I got them when i first set up my tank and i still carry on buying them, it would restrict what other fish you could put in there and looking at your plans with guppys it deffenatly would not work. But check them out because they make the tank lively and exciting :)

How big is the tank you're planning on buying?

The fish you stated in the original post are compatible. :)

It's the hagen elite style 60, that is a 60L tank measuring 60x30x35.
I bought it today :hyper:

Great!

Don't be shy, why don't you create a journal and take some photos for us? :D

  • I'm amazed at people who say they can breed platys. I had 4 females and 1 male for over 6 months, and nothing ever happened. ( I think the male was scared of all the females.) Or maybe he was a gay platty

Platys went mad with breeding in my tank. If you're looking to end up with some fry, possibly add another male?
