Fish Choice

I am still undecided what type of fish to put in my tank.
Definitely want a sand substrate with plenty of rocks and plants.
Am leaning towards the Ciclid family, my question is, can i also have other fish in the aquarium e.g a shoal of smaller fish like tetras, or has it got to be just Cichlids?

How big is the tank?
Have you fishless cycled it yet?
