Hi, this is my first post here, I'm new to fish keeping, three months back started looking after a friends fish who was going for a long trip, one small gold fish and one other small type in seperate fish bowls.

I have been changing their water regularly twice daily, always the water in both bowls had a bad gassy fart type smell like if one has had too much cabbage to eat, but since about a week, the water in the other fish's bowl has started smelling of mould.

I am wondering why the fish water is smelling this way, the fish looks like this, its has colours of black, orange and white.

Also when I kept both fish together in the same bowl the gold fish starting eating the others fins, which are now shredded, why did this happen? I feed them as often as possible.

Need to do a water change.

The first goldfish alone need 20 gallon tank, then 10 gallons for every other goldifsh added.
To be honest the bigger the tank the better, as goldfish are massive waste producers.
Also they need the double filter size due to the massive waste produce, so they need 60 gallon filter.

I would tell your friend to rehome the fish, or find a pond.
What type of goldfish are they as you cannot put fancy goldfish in a pond.

They will end up dying of ammonia poisoning.

That pic looks like a fancy goldifsh.

That poor angelfish, I am very suprised it is alive.

Angelfish need a tall aquarium 20g+ with warm 80F waste, no wonder it is being attacked as goldfish like 60F water and like to eat anything and everything.

I thought it looked like an angel fish but wasn't sure.
I think your friend needs to research the fish before he buys them.
Bowls shouldn't even be sold as there death traps.

Like I mentioned arlier I do change the Angelfish water twice every day, and this rancid odour has only developed since the past week, the gold fish does not have this stink in its water.

So I cannot keep these two together in the same tank? what all is involved in maintaining a tank, how often should it be cleaned? my friend has given these fish to me now., what all do i need to do to keep them properly.

No you cannot.
If one is an angel fish (look up angel fish on here in the search engine) it should be in a heated tank, so you need a heater. 24c is about right, whereas the goldfish will be fine with room temprature water.
You really need to get a tank or two if you wish to keep both properly. You need a filter as well.
You can now get under gravel filters for fish bowls!

I do hope you are treating the water with a tap safe remedy before addiong it to the bowls! the chlorine and chemicals in our tap water can seriously harm your fish!

Hope that is some help!
