Fish Behavior

I'm not sure if this is normal but my fish act very differently when I'm not around. I have watched them from a distance where they can't see me and they definetly act different. For one thing they socialize much more. When I watch them they just kinda swim up and down the walls but when I'm not around they do other things. For one thing I noticed my male platy doesn't want to mate when I'm around the tank. Is this normal?

Perhaps he's shy!!!!!!!

Perhaps whats happening here is the fish see you a something that gives them food, so when they see you they go into food mode, Then when your not there no pointing looking for food to they get on with what they want todo.

Hmm... I never really thought of it that way. I guess that could be it, although they never really come up as if they are going to get food. I agree with you that the male was shy. He always seems to be a little nervous when I'm around. I'll just keep watching them from a distance to see what they do.

Just think how big you are compared with them, they see you as a threat and potentially a predator.

They will act differently because they are not acting worried

i agree some of my fish act differently when i first turn the lights on and im standing there but once ive feed them they act normal again.

My fish know that when I am close to the tank and they don't see my head, it means I'm about to open the lid to feed them. It's funny how when I open the lid to feed, there are six fish staring at me from the water.

I just got the reward of watching my platies spawning! I'm not sure if the male was successful though. They circled each other a couple of times then began to spawn. After about 3 minutes it ended.

Three minutes? So the ARE just like us... Did he fall asleep shortly after?
