I would like to have a small fish tank at work. probably around 1-2 gal tank that I can keep on my desk. I would like to avoid a filter and heater. Any suggestions?

Btw I am trying to be a very responsible fish keeper. I have about 11 tanks at home. Community and most African Cichlids. Anyway i would like opinions both good and bad as I am weighing the pros and cons.

A betta with an ADF (african dwarf frogs),(if you go with a 2 gallon atleast). Or just a betta with ghost shrimp. You would have to find a peaceful betta though, as some won't get along with either ADF's or ghost shrimp.
I think it would be better to go with atleast a 2-2.5 gallon so you can use a heater, I'm just thinking that there might be large temperature flunctuations (maybe on the weekends).

Join the betta club! But consider yourself warned, bettas are like potato chips, you can't just have one! :p

Yeah I'm afraid in a tank that small, and not wanting a filter or heater that really limits you to only a betta(not that, that is a bad thing ;P and those other aforementioned inahabitants. If you wanted to get a hex 5 or something of the sorts you could get a DP, but it would have to be heated and have a filter. Other than that I don't know of anything else that would be possible. So if I were you, I would head on over to the betta section of the forum and get started. But you have been warned.... It is sooooo addicting~

I had an office betta in a one gallon tank for a few months last winter. It was great! Everyone used to fight over who got to feed him if I was out of the office

I ended up moving him home though, because the heating system we had wasn't very reliable. I came in one morning to find him half dead in something horrible like 58F water :X He's recuperated nicely since then, but he stays at home now where I can regulate the temp better.

Not that I would eat a betta. That original quote of mine felt odd.

WOW. Where do you find room to put all of the tanks? Water change day must take a while too.

I agree with everyone about trying a betta. I would suggest you get a 2.5 gallon mini bow or even a 5 gallon if you have room. They both come with heaters so you can keep the temperature consistant.
