IM not sure whats is going on. I have a 55 gal tank, ph level seems to be fine, but my 3 bala sharks keep running around like they are retarded. They keep swimming up real close to a rock, and seems like scratching or itching the side of there body with the rock ( or maybe gills ) or something. Anyone can give me info that this that would be great.

rubbing on rocks is a calssic sign of disease or agitation, what size are the sharks? you do know they will eventually outgrow your tank

what are your levels for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH?

how long has the tank been running? Was it cycled before adding fish?

PH LEVEL IS AROUND 7.2 7.4 ALL THE TIME. YEA I KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO GROW OUT OF THE TANK BUT IM GETTING A 200 GAL, HERE PRETTY SOON. OTHER THAN THAT THEY SEEM TO BE ACTING COMPLETLY NORMAL. THE BALAS ARE ABOUT 4 TO 5 INCHS I WOULD SAY. ALWAYS HUNGRYY TOO. SURPRISED THAT HAVN'T EATING MY TETRA'S YET.

sorry about the caps, iv had my tank for about 4 months now, ran it for about 2 weeks beofre adding any fish, than added some fish every week or two weeks depending on anythign i liked at the store.

whats your level for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, they are much more important than pH, the most common cause of flicking is diseases caused by poor water quality, without these stats we will not be able to get to the bottom of your problems and help you out.

they won't have outgrown the tank at that size so shouldn't be stress from that, i reckon water quality is most likley. do you have your own test kit?

Could be a sign of Ich (white spot disease). Can you see any tiny white lumps on their body at all (like grains of salt)? Fish that have white spot tend to flick their bodies against tank objects, such as ornaments or slate rock.

no i don't , i will have to go to the store and get soem today, ill repost later this evening when i get off work and get the test kit.

What kind of test kit do you think would be best or do you recomend anything?

Most API, Hagen and nurafin liquid test kits will be fine ... I am sure you could look for more expensive if you wanted.

Lets not forget too, Bala's are very skiddish fish and if they are in a high traffic area, they can be easily startled quite often. But if they are rubbing on ornaments, this is usually a sign of ich.

For future as well, watch the bala's fins. If you begin to a red/pink color spread out from the base of the fins, this is a very horrible disease called septicimia. I guess it is pretty common to bala's and I actually dealt with a bought of it when I had bala's over a year ago. This disease can kill within days so make sure you take actiaon at the first sign.... Dont mean to worry, just giving warning

okay good deal, ill buy some stuff anyways just in case of i spot something soon or later. Okay thanks im going tostop by the store on the way home.

okay, so i have been watching my fish for the past 6 hours aprox. haha no life but i think they are fine, acting completley normal.. Thanks for everyones help
