First Time Platy Fry

My platy fry did fine after three weeks. Rule of thumb, if they are too big to fit in the largest fishes mouth, you are golden. I have two fry in my tank right now that are about 4 weeks olds and they swim alongside the adults without a problem. If you cannot get fry food, finely ground fish flakes do just as nicely.

While I 've been sitting here tonight, glancing into my tank, I've noticed several fry swimming about.
They must be from a last drop, so only 4/5 weeks old & the adults are taking no notice at all.
Like Dieses says, if they can't fit into the adults mouths, then they're safe
These are the fry in with the adults, if you can spt them!

Yeah. It is really hard to gauge by age as they can grow at different rates. I saved 25 from one drop and I had some monster fry and some tiny fry. As you are watching them grow, move the bigger ones out when they are too big to be eaten. That way you can free up space for the smaller fry.

I spotted the fry cazgar!!! Too cute!

One of my fry.. He's about a CM long.

They could have been pregnant when you bought them from the store, they can store sperm for 6 months so they can mate with no male around. Also, i would get a breeding box and put the babies in there. Try to get a net breeding box since it is safer. I fed mine crushed pellets(really crushed) and crushed flakes and 4/4 survived :)

Platy fry really can survive in an adult tank without too much intervention and some hiding places.
One of my 2 platies gave birth 8 days ago at the same time as the guppy.
I didn't want to save any, as I already have enough. But I couldn't resist putting in the trap just a few guppies from the blonde babies and just 3 platies to see what's going to come out  (since another tank is on the way anyhow).
Well, platy fry are monsters. There are about 7 platy fry I noticed so far, swimming with the adults and older fry in the tank, and sucking up big flakes falling down at feeding time. Guppy fry must have got eaten though, can't see any from the ones I left in the tank, and there were quite a few.
I saved two platies from a previous batch which are growing with the male guppy fry, and it is amazing how good their surviving instinct is, compared to the poor gups especially. You can't see them unless it's feeding time, or you know their hiding places :hey:

I have some small pieces of flat slate in my tank that provide for a nice hiding ground for my fry. I do not intervene as i only have so much space, but I usually have 5-7 survivors per drop. I am constantly giving out fry on craiglist. Although I am sure my customers get annoyed as I will ask questions to ensure the responsibility levels of their future homes. I will not give out my fry to tanks not established or with incomaptible tankmates.
