Just done my first test on both tap water and tank water. The tank was filled 5 days ago with de-chlorinated tap water and I reused gravel and bog wood from a cold water tank. I am using under gravel filtration and the tank volume is 10 gallons (UK) though I filled with 8 gallons of water once the gravel and bog wood were placed. I have also used real plants from the old tank.

The tap water tests as follows:
PH 7.5
Ammonia 0.1
NitrAte 10
NitrIte 0

The tank has been heated and is running at about 78 degrees and tests as follows:
PH 7.5
Ammonia 0.1
NitrAte 0
NitrIte 0

I intend to stock a couple of Platys this weekend to kick the cycle of, how do these readings look?

I assume the Nitrate has dropped due to the plants making use of this nutrient.

Thanks

Jerry

Sorry I didn't reply sooner.

The readings look fine for adding your first fish, you seem to know about what the cycle is and platies for first fish are a good choice as they are very hardy. I would get just 2 platies though to cycle a tank don't be tempted to get any more until the tank has cycled and both ammonia and nitrite are 0 as otherwise the spikes of each could kill some fish.
