howdy yall.. not new to the hobby, used to have a few 125s and a 75 setup, took them down and now ready to give it a go again. I am a bit rusty, so glad there is so many forums out there. I am also use to oscars and bigger fish, but this time around gf wants a community tank. so we settled on a 55 with Angels as the main show piece. I am new to community tanks so as i write this i am tabbed over still doing research. So far

4x Angels, varied colors.

4x hatchet fish

2x dwarf gouramis

1x large plakat betta

4-6x cory cats
maybe a platty or 2

I am interested in the whole top-mid-bottem leval tank that works in harmony(most of the time, lol) anymore ideals, id like to get an eel like fish, but so far i havnt found one to fit.

Plan to use 2 EMP 400s and get an even flow so not to disrupt the Angels

bettas and gouramis do not go well, niether do gouramis and agels, or bettas and angels, they are all very territorial, but you could try some honey gouramis, or maybe some bolivian rams

try
4 angels(2 pairs or all females)
2 bolivian rams(m/f) or two honey gouramis(not the sunet variation)
4 hachect fish
5 corys( or 10 pygmy cories)

Up the hatchets to six and trash the betta and you will be good to go.

Welcome to the forum!

why trash the betta, he was looking foward to leaving his 5 and moving up lol.. what else could i fit, i really like the rope fish, again sorry to be newbish, i am use to oscars, bichirs, piranahas, and bigger goldfish. new to the little ones. :)

Welcome to TFF!

I agree with the above comment. I find the gourami more satisfying than the betta. That's a personal thing of course but since they can't all live together you have to pick your favorite. For me that's the gourami.

Still, i dont get why no betta, confused, will they fight? my friend has a bowl 42 with a pearl gourami and a crowntail that do fine.. well at least while i am there.

They do fight. I've had the gourami really go after a betta's tail and had to remove the betta. That was a powder blue dwarf gourami.

You have to remember that fish are individuals as well.

Your mate has been very lucky to get a gourami and a beta that get along, but it doesn't happen very often.

Shoaling fish do much better in larger groups of less species, so I would do something like;

five angels (odd numbers look more pleasing to the eye than even)
six or seven corydoras
" " " hatchets
a pair or Bolivian rams or a trio of apistogrammas.

Of course, we should all have asked how hard or soft your water is before we recommend species really; if your water's very hard none of those fish would thrive.

So sorry, I wouldn't of kept asking about my Betta if I saw the first post, my desktop was being weird with thi site. I am on laptop now and saw you answered my betta ? In first reply. Yea I was planning on all females. I live in NC. I moved back home for collage. When my mom built this house the water was hard( rust colored everything in sinks, toilet. She has bought some water purifying system. Not Brita etc.. But actually a big system in basement that suppose to soften water, remove iron etc.. Before I moved out my baby oscars thrived here great, though they might be hardier. I'll look iinto rams
Gf still wants a rope fish, is that do-able somehow

i dont think a rope fish i do-able, i read somewhere it needs 300l but 200l minimum, so it will be overstocking your tank

oh, and you cant add a betta, because i had 2 gouramis with my female betta, and she killed the gouramis when i was at school :(
