Thanks, Katchan, I hadn't thought of that. Shouldn't be too much of an issue here though as the tank is in a dark niche and the tank lights aren't strong. But I'll definitely remember that one for future reference.

What I've done so far is: put salt in this morning (1 tablespoon/5 gallons or just under= 1/20 ltrs). Tonight I will do a 30% water change and put the carbon filter in overnight. Tomorrow morning I will put in antibacterial treatment and another spoonful of salt to compensate for water change. Does that sound ok?

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everybody who helped out with good advice!
I treated first with Interpet Antifungus and finrot, then (having cleared the tank with carbon) with salt and Interpet Anti-internal bacteria.
Smudge is now a very happy and healthy little platy, with her tail almost grown back already. No more spots- except for the dark spot on each side of her abdomen, and I guess I don't need to the forum to diagnose THAT.
