Ive had my 65l fish tank about a week now, had the plants, filter etc all in and working for the week and wondered if anyone can recommend a good starter fish? Ive seen, and would like, some of the tiny blue/silvery fish. (about £1 each if that helps anyone ID them!!) I know they need to be bought in small groups but dont know if they are any good for the first fish to add. Id also like some catfish at some point but again any advice would be appreciated. :good:

thanks in advance,

Mitch

Your proberbly on about neons or cardinals tetra. Both are no good in a new set up (6 months old at least). And you really need to cycle your filter as said above.

According to my kits instructions (i bought an all in one kit) it says to add water, leave the tank for a few days for the bacteria to build up on the filter then add fish, it doesnt mention ammonia. Im guessing its missed that little bit out? Also anyone know where to get ammonia from? the pics that were on here are just red crosses now!

Thats what most LFS recommend aswell and its totally wrong, all you are doing by letting it stand is heating it up. The bacteria will not grow unless it is fed this is where Ammonia comes in. Homebase sell it if you are in the UK. If you cannot get any there are other sources such as fish food although the bottled stuff is preffered as its easier to dose/measure when adding. If you are in the UK where about as quite alot of members on here are willing to donate media which will help you speed up your cycle, myself included.

Hope that helps

Click "My Controls" near the top of this page on the right then click "Edit Profile Information" on the left under "Personal Profile".
