Can we just confirm? One? If so, I'll give him a month to live, hey I'm feeling optimistic  A lone Discus will be a stressed one, they need a group for security. A stressed Discus will not eat, and these fish are renound for starving themselves to death if their conditions are not correct... However, no doubt you will have done your research, added a group of 5+ and know that already and by this point you are thinking, "here we go, miss-phrased my post and now some smart alick is starting to point out the obvious"

All the best
Rabbut

Actually i only got one due to the store keeper said i would be better off with one or two at most in a 75g.I originally was looking at a small group but he said the did fine by themselves.I know this is not the same as what i have herd everywhere else but i will keep a close eye one him fore the next few days.So far he is doing well he is very outgoing fore a discus and has eaten some frozen mises shrimp and frozen bloodworms. If he starts showing signs of stress i will go get him some buddeys.

lfs talking trough thier arses again ... you need more discus, at least another 5 or take it back, otherwise most likely outcome is :rip:

You see theres your problem: you did your own research, then you listened to your LFS. A huge number of whom know nothing about the fish that they sell. Sounds crazy, but its true. People who've actually kept these fish in a home aquarium should always be your first port of call for advice.

The reason i decided to listen to him is because it isent exactly a lfs its a fish mantnece shop. They sell a few fish here and there but they mainly work with setting up and mantnicing fish tanks fore restaurants and other places.I have also been very happy with the fish quality in the past.So fare he is not showing singes of stress and has eaten frozen and freezdried foods very well.He was the dominate fish in the store tank and has been very outgoing so far.

Discus live in huge shoals in the wild, they are NOT fish that should be kept individually. By doing this, you are going against their natural instinct of protection in numbers and it will cause problems.

"Keeping several Discus cichlids together is a very good idea since Discus cichlids feel more at ease when in a group. A small group consisting of 6-8 specimens is ideal if your aquarium is large enough." http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/discusfish/

"Also discus being a shoaling species a minimum number of at least six discus will need to be kept." http://www.welshdiscusfish.co.uk/discusfish7.htm

"Its best to keep to keep discus fish in groups of minimum six individuals is considered ideal." http://www.articlesbase.com/pets-articles/...way-852781.html

"Discus are calm, timid fish who like to be kept in small groups of 6-8 fish" http://diszhal.info/english/cichlids/en_Sy...uifasciatus.php

"They like to be in groups of about 6 or 8 (a 50 gallon is a good size tank)." http://www.simplydiscus.com/library/discus...4beginner.shtml

I mean, all these sites must be wrong then, right?

I will be paying very careful attention to the discus over the weekend.Am trying to convince parents to get a small group of discus. So hopefully I will be able to get him some friends fairly early in the week. :good:

The lfs just told him what he wanted to hear. The fish already looks like it is stunted anyway. Just live and let kill live. Some people can take advise on the correct ways to do things, some like to learn it the hard way.

you should really start listening to what people are trying to tell you,the discus maybe alright now but give it about a week then he'll go down hill rapidly.i should know ive done it before but luckly i moved him in time i ended up putting him in a different tank with discus that was already there,so trust people when they say the person who does this tank maintence has gave some bad advice and that one discus will die pretty soon which is a shame -_-

what else is the tank stocked with you said it was a community tank???
