I am lost in a pet store.... HELP!
figure 8 puffer

Hi I am recently thinking of getting a Figure 8 puffer for my hexagonal 5 hex tank. I have looked at you website and read the care info. Provided, but I have one question to the care of these cute little grubbers.

1. do you have to gut load you food
2. how do you feed your puffers
3. and do you house you feeders (live and fresh) in other tanks or just put them in the tank with your puffer (overall what do you do when you first get you feeders?)
4. Could you feed them gut load crickets? (just curious- lol)
5. If I have to house the feeders would a beta bowl work? Or a 2litre bowl?
6. Can you house you puffer with just fresh and do salt occasionally? Like every 2 weeks?
7. Do you think that I should even house one figure eight in a 5 gallon? (I could use my cricket tank, but… I have so many crickets that they would die if I put them in a five gallon because of overcrowding
)

I think over a while I will be able to get a another 10 gallon and use the 5 gallon for something else like quarantine, but for right now I have to stick to a 5 gallon… getting a babysitting job so I will be able to pay for stuff like that rather than my parents.

I am getting the puffer when I get my job so my parents don’t have to pay for anything, but save up for 10 gallon will have to come later.

I just need those questions answered… thanks!

1 No, since you can feed them commerical frozen food
2 by dropping thawed blood worms, brine shrimp, and snails into the tank
3 you dont need feeders outside of snails for their teeth
4 you could but why would you?
5 snails would be fine in a betta bowl
6 figure 8s do better in lightly brackish water <= to 1.005 see the stickys in the brackish section for details
7 no, 10 gallon bare minimum. 20 much better

hope it helps!

This thread might also help.

Further to the other questions, I wouldn't give them any feeders whatsoever, and I'd ensure that they're in brackish water long term. Fluctuating salinity is ok, but keeping them in bare fresh with a little salted water isn't truly a brackish aquarium, it would be much better in the long term to keep them in an SG of around 1.005.

AC106 has made the right points already.
