I was hoping to set up a malawi cichlid tank in my 55 gallon but after figuring out how much everything would cost it doesn't look like that is going to happen..at least not for a very long time -_-

So I was thinking of getting some firemouths maybe 2-4 and then I'd like to maybe get another type of more "peaceful cichlid" to go with the firemouths. What are my options there? Then maybe a nice schooling fish and maybe some bottom dwellers?

Hiya Elisabeth83,

I have had the dubious honour of figuring out this one too. I eventually gave up, and put in two Rainbow Cichlids, aka 'Rainbows', and found that after the initial boistrousness of the Firemouths had receded, that they got on very well. I have just lost one of my rainbows today however. It was at the hands of his 'mate'.

I can only assume that they are coming closer to adulthood, and were fighting for territory. My Firemouths really give my juvenile Cons some stick too! They will always put up a good fight!

Mine are only young but i have 4 and they all get on fine with the community....may change as they get older i suppose?

The ones I'd be getting are all small too and I'm wondering the same thing that if I keep them with fish like a school of tetras or rasboras if they would turn on them once they got older and bigger :/

I'd like to hear from others on here who keep adult firemouths and what they keep them with....

edit: btw thats a very nice firemouth in your pic :D

I'm working with this same problem as my firemouth wasn't getting along with my severum so I moved him, now I am re-designing my tank around him. Such a beautiful fish. I was going the same way as sub.42.
  • Firemouth

  • Rams
  • Some tetra not sure what type yet
