Hi everyone

A little advice would be great, if you wouldn't mind. I have just returned from being away for 16 days to find that all my fish are still alive (hurray!) but that one of the guppies seems to have what might be finrot (boooo). His tail is split in two down the middle (almost all the way to the base of the tail) and he seems to have what looks like a pink blister or sore at the base of his tail (only visible on one side). I'll try to get some pictures later.

Could this be finrot? I had previously treated the tank with myzacyn by waterlife for an injury to a gourami, who ha now been rehomed. Should I start another treatment cycle for finrot?

I'm pretty happy the water quality is good. Stats (tested with API master test kit):

Volume: 35 litres
Temp: 25 degrees C
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 40 ppm
pH: 7.4

Stock: 5 small male guppies, 3 neon tetras.

None of the other guppies seem to be affected. I know the neons need a bigger group, but I didn't want to do this when I was going to be away for a while.

On a plus point clearly my filtration is good, because the tank was clearly over-fed by the holiday feeder but there was no ammonia/nitrite spike. Vacuumed out an awful lot of debris though!

I don't have a hospital tank at present - if I were to picked up a small tank today (maybe 5 litres?), and added some filter sponge and ceramic gravels from the mature tank to it, do you think that would serve OK for one small guppy to isolate and treat for finrot?

Any help would be appreciated.

So I managed to pick up a hospital tank - an Aqua One 28 (12 litres) and have set it up and have put a big chunk of LFS sponge in the filter (350 litres an hour - should be more than enough, right?) and moved the sick guppy over. I know technically this is a fish-in cycle but hopefully the mature sponge will be able to cope with one little guppy, and I will do daily water level checks and change water as necessary.

Any thoughts on how much myzacyn I should dose for finrot, or any other suggestions for medication?

No ideas from anyone? Guppy this morning doesn't look good - his gills are going very fast and he seems to be having trouble swimming. When he gets caught in the flow on the filter he gets blown all off course. Normally he quite likes swimming in the flow, but doesn't look the same at all.

Ammonia and Nitrite both 0 after 12 hours, so I don't think that is the problem.

Can anyone help me please?
